A Fresh Look for SharePoint Document Libraries: What’s Changing and Why It Matters

Microsoft is rolling out a refreshed user experience for SharePoint document libraries, designed to make navigation and common actions more intuitive and efficient. Based on user feedback, this update focuses on streamlining workflows without disrupting existing customisations.

Rollout Timeline

  • Targeted Release: Early to late November 2025
  • General Availability: Early to late January 2026 (Worldwide, GCC, GCC High, and DoD)

What’s New?

Here’s a quick look at the key improvements:

  • Simplified Command Bar: A new “Create or Upload” button combines the “New” and “Upload” actions for quicker access.
  • Enhanced Breadcrumb Navigation: Users can now easily jump between folders, view folder context, and upload or create directly within the breadcrumb dropdown.
  • Improved View Management: Custom views are now more visible, with clear indicators when filters or sorts are applied but not saved.
  • Filter Pills: Quickly refine views using pill-style filters for file types and other criteria—no need to open the full filter pane.
  • New View Options Button: Access layout, sorting, grouping, and field formatting options in one place.
  • Updated Command Bar Formatting: Commands marked as "primary": true and "position": 0 will now appear in a distinct area of the command bar.

Impact on Customisations

Good news—existing customisations using SPFX, column formatting, or view formatting remain unaffected. Only command bar formatters may need review based on updated placement behavior.

What You Need to Do

No action is required unless you use custom command bar formatters. In that case, check out the updated documentation: https://learn.microsoft.com/sharepoint/dev/declarative-customization/view-commandbar-formatting.

Compliance

No compliance concerns have been identified, but organisations should review as needed.
