New Copilot Setting for Sensitive Information – What You Need to Know

Kia ora,

We’re reaching out to let you as a customer that works with sensitive content. Microsoft has added new setting for Copilot that may be relevant to your organisation, especially if you work with sensitive or confidential information.

What’s new?

Microsoft has introduced a Harmful Content Protection setting in Copilot. This feature is designed to help prevent Copilot from processing content that may be considered harmful or sensitive. In some cases, this protection may block Copilot from assisting with legitimate business content that includes sensitive terms or data.

Why does this matter to you?

If you’ve noticed Copilot refusing to respond or assist with certain tasks that involve sensitive information this setting may be the reason. You now have the option to adjust it.

What are the options?

You can configure the setting in two ways:

  • For an individual user – Useful if only specific team members need to work with sensitive content.
  • For everyone in your organisation – Ideal if sensitive content is common across your business.

Should I enable it?

We recommend reviewing your current experience with Copilot first. If you haven’t encountered any issues, you may not need to change anything. However, if Copilot is blocking content you believe is safe and necessary for your work, enabling this setting could help.

Things to consider before enabling:

  • Risk vs. usability – Disabling protection may allow Copilot to process more content, but it could also increase exposure to potentially harmful material.
  • Training and awareness – Make sure users understand what types of content are appropriate for Copilot to process.

If you’d like help reviewing or configuring this setting, we’re happy to assist.
