There are two primary advantages of moving or redirecting known folders to Microsoft OneDrive for the users:
You can continue using the folders you’re familiar with, and don’t have to change your daily work habits to save files to OneDrive.
Saving files to OneDrive backs up your data in the cloud and gives them access to their files from any device.
For these reasons, Microsoft recommend moving or redirecting known folders to OneDrive.
Although Known Folder Move has been available for Windows for some time now, Known Folder Move for macOS as just gone into Public Preview.
Folder Backup (Known Folder Move) will also enable you to access your most important files across different devices and applications with no disruption to productivity, because your content is automatically synced to OneDrive. In addition, you will be able to securely share your data within and outside their organisation, increasing collaboration…assuming external sharing is enabled in your M365 tenant.
If admins of organisations decide to perform a device refresh, they don’t need to worry about losing user data. For new machines, Known Folder Move can be configured from the start, so all new files are uploaded to the cloud. This is great for organizations as it increases user engagement with OneDrive, and admins can easily protect files with enterprise-level security and compliance that comes built in.
IT admins will be able to use preferences to encourage Mac users to perform Known Folder Move to keep their files backed up and protected, or they can use a silent property to automatically move content in the Desktop and Documents folders to OneDrive.
